One of my first copywriting projects was for an app-based start-up I worked for as a Community Manager, and later as the Growth Marketing Manager. I built a large scale student community of book readers on the Swell app (a voice based platform similar to social media) - "Brave New Words" - which reached 4000+ followers, and indirectly reached 36000+ readers.
The project was to craft a series of push notifications for "Brave New Words", sent to batches of 500-1000 community members at a time. The best part was that each notification led to a post made by a community member, who was also tagged on the notification.
Here's a bit about the structure of this community, so the structure of the copy makes a bit more sense. It was full of "prompts" posted by student literary societies/book clubs from colleges and universities in India. These were not for AI, but for human members to talk about books. And under each prompt, one could see and listen to the responses to that prompt.
For instance, one of the prompts read "The villain you hate that you love", and the featured response was about the Evil Queen in Snow White and how petty she was. And so, the obvious choice I made was to word the notification this way - "Mirror, mirror (replaced by 2 mirror emojis to save space), on the wall, who's the pettiest villain of them all? 😈 Tell us!"
For those who don't know, the reference here is from the iconic line this character says while looking at the mirror, "Mirror mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all?" and overall, this project was all about sparking fun in the community, the literary way!
