Designing Swiggy for School Kids

Assumptions-

It is for school going kids who want to get food delivered at home.

We will be talking about the food delivery vertical of swiggy here.

The Primary User of this is going to be the kid.

There are no constraints that the service has to built under.

We’ll be designing a separate app for the kids and in the existing Swiggy app for the adults, we’ll add an option of adding a separate profile. The parent/guardian will be able to set up the profile for their kids where they’ll be able to track and monitor the account.

Product Understanding

Swiggy is a food delivery service which has other verticals such as grocery delivery and courier services. It is primarily operating in tier-1 and tier-2 cities of India. It has a mobile app as well as a desktop version.

So the user journey is -

  1. If the user is new on the platform, they’ll need to sign up first by entering details like their mobile number and email address. Post verification of the number by entering otp, the user will be able to access the platform
  2. For the existing users- The user will open the app or webpage
  3. Search for the food they want to have and then pick a restaurant that they want to order from

or

  1. If they already have a restaurant and dish in mind they’ll search for that restaurant on the platform
  2. The user will then place the order by making the payment.
  3. Once the order is played the user can track the status of it on the platform

User Persona-

The users of this feature will be children between the ages 10-15, since children below the age of 10 are seldomly left alone and have the need to order food from the outside; and above that don’t really need the differentiation.

Moreover, the focus will be on those who are living in tier-1 cities with access to internet and a phone or desktop, since demand might not be much in the tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Pain Points-

  1. Kids might not be able to make the best judgement of what kind of food they should order or the restaurant from they should order it from.
  2. Payment is a hassle since children that young don’t own a bank account.
  3. Not all kind of food is suitable for the kids and portion Size is smaller for the kids; they might not be able to consume the entire portion of the food since it is as per the adult’s needs.
  4. Safety Concerns; since it will be the kid who will be using this feature.

Prioritizing-

We’ll focus on problems 1,2,4 since 3 can be solved post the launch of this feature

Listing Down the Solutions-

  1. Swiggy for kids will be a separate app/website for the kids to use. Parents/Guardians will have the option of adding the children’s profile in their account from where they will be able to monitor the kid’s activities.
  2. The parent account will have the option to moderate the choices of restaurant and the food that the kids can order, with the parents having the option of setting the upper limit of the order value.
  3. The payment for the order can be made using the Swiggy Wallet. The parent/guardian can top up the Swiggy wallet on a monthly basis. They’ll also be notified when a order is place or if the amount in the wallet goes below a certain amount.
  4. The kid and the parent, both will be able track the status of the order.

Tradeoffs-

Just in case the restaurants chosen by the parents are closed, or the wallet is not recharged on time, the kid will not be able to order food.

Summary-

The Swiggy for kids will be designed for school kids who need to order food. It’ll have the list of restaurants that will be chosen by their parents. The kid will be able to choose what he/she wants to eat and order it. The payment can be made using the wallet balance; and just in case the balance run low, the parents will be notified of it. The order can be tracked by both the parent and the kid.
