Choosing an online learning platform is no longer only about finding the cheapest course or the biggest brand name. In 2026, learners are looking for programs that can help them build practical skills, earn credible credentials, change careers, and improve their chances of getting hired. This makes an upGrad review especially useful because upGrad offers a very wide range of programs across technology, data science, AI, management, digital marketing, finance, and degree programs.
I’m Riten, founder of Fueler, a skills-first portfolio platform building the career infrastructure for 100 million creative professionals. Fueler connects talented individuals with companies through assignments, portfolios, and projects, not just resumes or CVs. Think of it as Dribbble/Behance for work samples combined with AngelList for hiring infrastructure.
In this review, I will look at upGrad's current course offerings, learning model, fees, placement support, learner outcomes, and overall career value. I will also explain where upGrad can make sense, where you should be careful, and why your own proof of work still matters even after completing a recognised course.
upGrad has grown into a broad online higher-education and upskilling platform rather than a company focused on one particular course category. Its current offerings include certification courses, postgraduate programs, master's degrees, bachelor's programs, and professional learning options across areas such as data science, artificial intelligence, management, digital marketing, finance, and technology.
This range is one of upGrad's biggest strengths, but it can also make the platform difficult to evaluate. A short ₹499 introductory AI course and a ₹3.25 lakh postgraduate data science program are both presented within the larger upGrad ecosystem, but they are designed for very different learners and career goals.
That is why I would not ask whether upGrad is good or bad as a single question. The better question is whether a particular upGrad program is suitable for your experience, budget, career target, and expected outcome.
upGrad's current course catalogue covers a wide range of career paths. Its certification catalogue highlights data science, AI, management, financial modelling, HR, product management, and digital marketing, while its broader platform also offers bachelor's, master's, and postgraduate programs.
This means a learner can use the platform for a short-term skill upgrade or choose a much longer academic and career-oriented program.
Why It Matters: The variety allows learners to choose a program based on their career stage instead of forcing everyone into the same learning model. However, you should compare the exact curriculum, credential, duration, fee, and career support of the specific program you are considering because the upGrad brand covers many different products.
upGrad combines recorded learning, live sessions, projects, industry experts, mentorship, assessments, and learner support depending on the program. Its college-focused job-ready programs, for example, currently mention weekly live sessions, recorded sessions, hands-on projects, industry mentors, Q&A support, and placement assistance.
The learning experience therefore sits somewhere between self-paced online learning and a traditional classroom program. You get flexibility, but some programs also provide structured interaction and career support that you would not receive from a simple collection of YouTube videos.
Why It Matters: Online education becomes much more valuable when learners actually apply what they learn. A structured program can reduce the problem of deciding what to study next, but your final career outcome still depends heavily on how much practical work you complete.
Placement support is one of the areas where learners need to read the fine print instead of looking only at large numbers in advertisements. upGrad's current placement-support page lists services including a job portal, career coaching, career fairs and hackathons, 1:1 industry mentorship, networking sessions, and hiring partners. It also currently displays figures such as 300+ hiring partners, 150 transitions per month, a 50% average salary hike, and a highest salary offered of ₹1.23 crore.
These numbers can be useful indicators, but they should not be treated as the expected outcome for every learner. Different upGrad programs have different eligibility requirements, course structures, placement processes, and learner populations.
Why It Matters: Placement support can make job searching easier, but it should not be confused with a guaranteed job. Your skills, previous experience, portfolio, interview performance, location, and target role all influence the final outcome.
upGrad publishes different outcome figures for different programs, which is important to understand before making a decision. Its college-focused job-ready programs currently report an average salary of ₹5 LPA, a highest salary of ₹12 LPA, 5,000+ students placed, and 300+ hiring partners for the relevant programs.
A separate upGrad Data Science and Analytics program currently reports that 5 out of 6 learners saw positive career growth and lists an average salary of ₹6 LPA, alongside 300+ hiring partners and career training.
These figures are program-specific, so I would avoid combining them into one universal "upGrad placement rate."
Why It Matters: Salary averages are useful for understanding potential outcomes, but they should not become your only reason for enrolling. A ₹6 LPA average, for example, can mean very different things to a fresher, a career switcher, and a professional already earning ₹8 LPA.
There is no single upGrad fee because the platform offers programs ranging from very short introductory courses to expensive postgraduate and degree programs. The current certification catalogue includes programs priced at ₹499, ₹65,000, ₹70,000, ₹84,999, ₹99,000, ₹1.06 lakh, ₹1.25 lakh, ₹1.55 lakh, ₹1.6 lakh, and ₹1.8 lakh depending on the course and university or partner involved.
Longer programs can cost substantially more. For example, the current IIIT Bangalore Post Graduate Programme in Data Science lists a total fee of ₹3.25 lakh, while another University of Maryland data science program lists a total fee of ₹2.5 lakh.
Why It Matters: You should never compare two upGrad programs only by their price. Compare the credential, curriculum depth, teaching model, projects, university affiliation, career support, duration, and expected career outcome before deciding.
My answer is: it depends on the program and your starting point.
If you are a beginner who needs structure, mentorship, projects, career guidance, and a clear learning roadmap, an upGrad program can provide more value than trying to assemble everything yourself. Its wide course catalogue also makes it possible to choose a program that matches your current career stage.
If you are already experienced in your field and only need to learn one specific skill, paying several lakhs for a broad program may not make financial sense. You may be better off with a focused certification, specialised course, official documentation, practical projects, or direct experience.
The biggest mistake is treating the certificate as the final product.
The certificate is only one part of the outcome.
The more important question is what you can show after completing the course.
If you study data analytics, build dashboards and case studies.
If you study digital marketing, document campaigns and results.
If you study AI, build working applications.
If you study product management, create product case studies.
If you study finance, build financial models and analysis projects.
This is where I believe proof of work is becoming more important in hiring.
The easiest way to improve the ROI of an online course is to turn learning into visible evidence. Completing ten modules and receiving a certificate does not automatically prove that you can perform the job, but a strong portfolio can help employers understand your ability much faster.
Imagine two candidates completing the same upGrad data science course. One candidate adds "Data Science Certified" to a resume, while the other publishes three projects showing data cleaning, exploratory analysis, machine learning, business recommendations, and clear explanations of the decisions they made. The second candidate gives an employer much more information to evaluate.
This is why I recommend building a career portfolio instead of relying only on a resume.
For each project, explain the problem, your role, the tools you used, the decisions you made, the result, and what you learned. This approach turns your course assignments into professional evidence instead of letting them disappear after the course ends.
You can also learn how to build a career portfolio that actually gets jobs and use the same framework for your upGrad projects.
After looking at the current course catalogue, learning model, fees, career support, and published outcomes, I would summarise upGrad's strengths and limitations this way.
Pros
Cons
Why It Matters: upGrad should be evaluated as a collection of different learning products rather than one single course. The right program can provide useful structure and career support, but choosing the wrong program can make the investment difficult to justify.
I believe education becomes much more valuable when it creates something you can show.
If you complete a data science course, turn your strongest assignment into a case study.
If you complete a marketing course, document your campaign strategy and results.
If you complete an AI program, build a working AI application.
If you complete a product management course, show your research, product decisions, user journey, and final recommendation.
Your course should give you knowledge, but your projects should give employers evidence.
This is the thinking behind Fueler. I am building a platform where professionals can showcase actual projects, assignments, and work rather than depending entirely on resumes or certificates.
If you already have professional experience, you can also turn your existing work experience into a career portfolio so that your previous work becomes visible during your next job search.
The goal is simple: do not just tell employers that you are skilled. Give them something they can evaluate.
My overall upGrad review for 2026 is that upGrad remains a broad and flexible learning platform with options ranging from short certifications to postgraduate and degree programs. Its strongest advantage is the combination of course variety, practical learning, university partnerships, mentorship, and career support across selected programs.
But I would not recommend joining upGrad simply because of a high salary figure or a famous university partnership.
First decide what career outcome you want.
Then find the exact program that supports that outcome.
Compare the fee with cheaper alternatives.
Check the curriculum carefully.
Understand the placement terms.
And most importantly, think about what you will build during the program.
A course can give you knowledge.
A certificate can give you a credential.
Career support can give you opportunities.
But your proof of work can show employers that you can actually execute.
That is where the real career value comes from.
upGrad can be worth the investment when the selected program matches your career goal and you need structured learning, mentorship, projects, or career support. The value depends on the specific course because upGrad offers programs with very different fees, durations, credentials, and career outcomes.
upGrad fees vary widely by program. Its current certification catalogue includes options from ₹499 to more than ₹1.8 lakh, while some postgraduate programs cost around ₹2.5 lakh to ₹3.25 lakh or more. The exact fee should always be checked on the specific program page before enrolling.
Yes, selected upGrad programs provide career and placement support that can include job portals, career coaching, networking, career fairs, hackathons, mentorship, interview preparation, and access to hiring partners. However, placement assistance should not be interpreted as a guaranteed job for every learner.
There is no single average salary for all upGrad learners because outcomes vary by course and learner profile. For example, upGrad currently reports ₹5 LPA average salary for its college-focused job-ready programs and ₹6 LPA for one Data Science and Analytics program. These figures should be evaluated against the specific program rather than treated as a universal upGrad salary outcome.
An upGrad certificate can demonstrate that you completed a learning program, but it does not by itself prove that you can perform the job. Building projects, documenting your results, developing a strong portfolio, practising interviews, and demonstrating practical skills can make your application much stronger than relying on the certificate alone.
