Howrah Bridge History
The Howrah Bridge was built to replace the old Howrah Bridge, a floating pontoon bridge that was no longer able to handle the increased traffic between Kolkata and Howrah. Construction began in 1936 and was completed in 1942. The bridge was inaugurated on February 3, 1943.
