WhatsApp is one of the world's most-used messaging platforms, but maintaining long-term user engagement remains a challenge as messaging becomes increasingly habitual. As part of a design challenge, I explored how gamification could be used responsibly to strengthen meaningful interactions rather than simply increase screen time.
I introduced Friendship Score, a relationship-driven engagement system that rewards users based on the quality and consistency of their interactions. The solution combines onboarding, relationship insights, leaderboards, and utility-driven rewards such as scheduled messages and additional pinned chats to create value beyond messaging.
The goal was to transform everyday conversations into meaningful social experiences while preserving WhatsApp’s familiar and non-intrusive user experience. By focusing on emotional engagement, passive gamification, and practical rewards, the concept encourages users to stay connected with the people who matter most.
