Context Summary:

Before the Transformer model, sequence transduction models like RNNs (Recurrent Neural Networks) and CNNs (Convolutional Neural Networks) dominated natural language processing tasks. These models process data sequentially, which can limit parallelization and slow down training. The Transformer uses self-attention — a mechanism that weighs the importance of each part of the input sequence relative to others — and entirely removes recurrence. Multi-head self-attention enables the model to capture different types of relationships between words at different positions. This design improves efficiency, allows for much larger models, and achieves state-of-the-art results in tasks such as language translation. Over time, this architecture became the backbone of models like BERT, GPT, and many others, leading to breakthroughs in AI capabilities across text, image, and multimodal tasks.
