If you are applying for jobs and not hearing back, you are not alone. I speak to students, freshers, and working professionals every week who tell me the same thing. They apply to dozens of roles, share their resume everywhere, and still get ignored.
Here is a hard truth most people do not like to hear. Your resume is slowly becoming irrelevant.
I am Riten, founder of Fueler. For the last four years, I have worked closely with hiring managers across different industries and helped thousands of people get jobs and freelance work through their skills. I have seen how hiring has changed in real time, and why resumes alone are no longer enough.
Let me explain what is happening and what is replacing the traditional resume.
A resume was designed for a very different world. Earlier, fewer people applied for each role, and degrees or company names mattered a lot. Today, everything has changed.
Hiring managers receive hundreds, sometimes thousands, of applications for a single role. Because of this, they spend very little time on each resume. On average, a resume gets scanned for just 10 to 20 seconds.
In those few seconds, you are trying to explain your skills, experience, impact, and potential on one or two pages. On top of that, anyone can write anything on a resume. Skills are often self-claimed, results are vague, and numbers are hard to verify.
This has made hiring harder for companies and more frustrating for candidates.
What is replacing the resume is something much more powerful: Proof of work.
Proof of work means showing real examples of what you have done. It includes projects, assignments, case studies, live work samples, and documented results. Instead of saying “I know marketing” or “I am good at design,” you show actual campaigns, designs, reports, or products you have worked on.
From what I have seen, hiring managers may spend only seconds on a resume, but they will easily spend five minutes or more on a well-organised portfolio that shows proof of work. They want to see how you think, how you solve problems, and what results you can create.
In fact, around 80 to 90 percent of successful hires I have tracked had some form of work showcase beyond their resume.

Many people think portfolios are only for designers or writers. That is no longer true.
I am seeing proof of work matter across almost every role, including marketing, sales, development, operations, and product roles.
The role does not matter. What matters is showing what you can actually do.
We live in a world where information is cheap. Courses are everywhere, certificates are easy to get, and resumes look similar. In such a world, proof cuts through noise.
Proof of work builds instant credibility. It shows effort, consistency, and learning. It reduces hiring risk for companies because they can see your abilities before hiring you.
Your work tells a story your resume never can.
I personally hated the traditional hiring process. I have seen talented people get rejected because they could not express themselves on a resume. At Fueler, we are building a portfolio platform that helps people showcase their proof of work and helps companies hire through assignments.
Instead of filtering people only by resumes, companies can see real work submissions, evaluate skills fairly, and make better hiring decisions. It is better for candidates and better for employers.
Ask yourself one simple question.
What proof are you currently sharing with potential employers?
If the answer is “only my resume,” it is time to rethink your approach. Start documenting your work. Build small projects. Share assignments. Explain your thinking. Organise everything in one place where anyone can see what you are capable of.
The future of hiring belongs to those who can show, not just tell.
If you need help figuring out what proof of work to build or how to present it, I am always happy to help.
Resumes are getting ignored because recruiters receive too many applications and have very little time. Most resumes look similar and rely on self-claimed skills. Without clear proof, recruiters find it hard to judge real ability, so they move on quickly.
Proof of work means real examples of your skills and experience. This can include projects, assignments, case studies, reports, designs, code, or documented results. Proof of work shows how you apply your knowledge in real situations.
Yes, freshers benefit the most from portfolios. Even without job experience, freshers can show college projects, self-initiated work, internships, mock assignments, or learning projects. A portfolio helps freshers stand out without relying only on degrees.
A portfolio does not replace a resume completely, but it makes the resume stronger. A resume gives a quick overview, while a portfolio provides depth and trust. Together, they improve your chances of getting shortlisted.
You can start by solving real-world problems, taking up assignments, contributing to open projects, freelancing, or building personal projects. Document your process, challenges, and outcomes. Consistent small efforts build strong proof over time.
